If the weather cooperates, millions of people can witness Sunday’s rare “Ring of Fire” solar eclipse — but what if you’re one of the billions who can’t? You can still watch the event online.

That’s what Alan MacRobert, a senior editor at Sky & Telescope magazine, is planning to do. He’s based in the Boston area, where not a bit of the annular solar eclipse will be visible. So MacRobert will be cruising the Internet, looking for a webcast with a stable video stream.

He should have plenty of webcasts to choose from. “There are more popping up as we get closer to the event,” he told me.

Sunday’s spectacle isn’t your garden-variety solar eclipse: Because the moon is farther away from Earth than usual, the angular size of the lunar disk isn’t quite wide enough to cover up the sun completely. Thus, at the peak of the eclipse, a thin ring of the sun’s bright photosphere will remain exposed around the moon’s dark circle.

NASA’s ScienceCast explains the why, when, where and how of the May 20 annular solar eclipse.

That’s what’s known as an annular eclipse, which gets its name from the Latin word for “little ring”: annulus. The little ring can be seen from a 200-mile-wide strip of territory, extending from southern China, through Japan, across the North Pacific and over to the U.S. West Coast. From the Oregon-California border, the strip goes across parts of Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

The “Ring of Fire” effect lasts just a few minutes. For about an hour before and after the big event, a partial solar eclipse will darken the sun and then retreat. The partial phase can also be seen to varying degrees from a much wider swath of eastern Asia, the Pacific and North America.

If you’re in the eclipse zone, do not gaze at the sun without taking proper precautions. Such precautions can range from eclipse-viewing glasses, to specially designed solar filters, to pinhole projectors. Check out this NASA Web page or this video for the details. Here’s a detailed video about eye safety from Eyes on the Sky. (Thanks, @AstronomyDave!)

If you’re not in the eclipse zone, you’re not alone: The U.S. East Coast, South America, Europe, Africa, Australia and Antarctica will be totally left out. And let’s face it: Even if you are in the zone, the weather may not cooperate. That’s especially the case for places like Hong Kong and Guangzhou, where millions might miss the annular eclipse due to cloudy skies. “This is monsoon season in south China, so they’re going to need quite a bit of luck to have a chance of seeing this one,” MacRobert said.

Watching the eclipse via a webcast isn’t a sure thing, either. The skies might be clouded over at the camera location. There could be technical difficulties. And even if everything works, the webcast could freeze up if the video server becomes overwhelmed with traffic. That’s why MacRobert is planning to play the field, and why you’d be best advised to do the same. Here are a few of the options for Sunday eclipse views over a computer screen or smartphone:

Slooh Space Camera: The Slooh website has organized a series of webcasts from Japan, California, Arizona and New Mexico, accompanied by commentary from Astronomy Magazine columnist Bob Berman and Lucie Green, a BBC commentator and solar researcher at University College London’s Mullard Space Science Laboratory. The show gets started at 5:30 p.m. ET Sunday, when the eclipse will be just getting good in Japan. Prime time for the webcasts from the American West will kick in around 8 p.m. ET. For more, check out Slooh’s news release.

Eclipse Live from Fujiyama: Panasonic is planning a solar-powered webcast from high atop Japan’s Mount Fuji, which is inside the track of annularity. The team will charge up batteries from an array of electricity-generating solar cells at a base camp, then carry the batteries up to the camera site. Video coverage via Ustream is due to start up at 5 p.m. ET. This YouTube video previews the event. For updates, check out the project’sFacebook page and Twitter stream.

Hong Kong Observatory: The webcast from Hong Kong is due to begin at 5:41 p.m. ET.

Live-Eclipse: Japanese eclipse-chasers plan to be webcasting via Ustream at 6 p.m. ET.

More from YokosoNews: This page from the Japanese news site lists lots of webcasts, generally beginning at 5 p.m. ET or later.

More from Ustream: Do a search on “eclipse” and you’ll find all sorts of Ustream goodies, from 5 p.m. ET onward. One user is promising a video stream from the northern tip of Taiwan starting at 4:50 p.m. ET.

AstroBob’s viewing guide: Duluth photographer Bob King provides a vivid guide to the phases of an annular eclipse and also links to AstronomyLive.com as a potential source of webcasts.

University of North Dakota: UND’s SEMS (Sun Earth Moon Systems) team is organizing an eclipse webcast from Shasta College in Whittier, Calif. The streaming is due to begin at 8 p.m. ET, and there’s a chat window that lets you compare notes with other eclipse fans. The UND team has been doing eclipse webcasts since 2004, so they’ve built up a loyal following over the years.

Scotty’s Sky: Skywatcher Scotty Degenhardt is promising an unconventional webcast of the annular eclipse via his iPhone from Area 51′s “Black Mailbox,” a popular gathering place for UFO fans in the Nevada desert. The show is set to start at 8:10 p.m. ET. Check out Degenhardt’s website for the details.

Exploratorium in Second Life: Speaking of “unconventional” … San Francisco’s Exploratorium science center is planning to provide information about the eclipse in the Second Life virtual world. If you’re a Second Life resident, set a course for Exploratorium Island.

If you’re wowed by webcasts, stay tuned: There’ll be another big event on June 5, when the planet Venus makes a must-see transit across the sun’s disk; and again on Nov. 13, when a total solar eclipse takes place.

Are there any annular eclipse webcasts I’m missing? Pass ‘em along in the comment section below.

Update for 12:10 p.m. ET May 18: To find out whether any part of the eclipse will be visible from your locale, consult this clickable map from NASA. The times are listed in UTC. Subtract four hours to convert to ET, five hours for CT, six hours for MT, seven hours for PT.

The former “Baywatch” star was seen sipping wine as she dined with a group of friends at the Boa restaurant in West Hollywood, Calif., but after raising her glass for a toast, the evening turned raunchy as the actress cavorted around one of her friends before straddling his lap.

In a video obtained by TMZ, Anderson can be seen brushing her fingers across her companion’s lips before sitting on another man’s lap and raising a leg in the air.

She then takes another of her fellow diners by the hand and pulls him to the middle of the restaurant where she performs an impromptu ballroom dance routine for amazed onlookers.

Author John Morris: ‘Jack the Ripper Was a woman’

jack the ripper was a woman and john morris

John Morris, having studied the notorious Jack the Ripper for fifty years, has released a book, “Hand of a Woman,” and has divulged a startling possibility. Jack the Ripper, the subject of much curiosity and an unsolved mystery for many years, may very well have been a woman.

Williams states that many signs point to a woman as the culprit seeing as the crimes were committed in moments of passion and jealousy. In addition, no conclusive evidence points to a man except for the common assumption that only men could be such brutal killers.

Jack the Ripper crimes wreaked havoc in Britain. In each case, the wombs of women were attacked. In recent times, similar killings have occurred and in the cases that were solved, women were the perpetrators. Morris’ research suggests that Lizzie Williams, wife of suspect Sir John Williams, was actually a potential suspect with the motive to kill the woman who may have been her husband’s lover.

When thinking outside of the box, history can lead people in an entirely new direction. While too much time and too little evidence are likely to make a clean-cut resolution possible, Morris provides a new twist to an old crime.

Man with 30 kids wants state help to pay his child support

A 33-year-old man who has fathered 30 kids is asking the state of Tennessee to give him a hand with his child support payments. Desmond Hatchett is having a tough time making ends meet while working a minimum wage job and seeing half of his paycheck get split up between his 11 baby mamas. Incidentally, his score and 10 kids is a record for Knox County, and some of his kids receive as little as $1.49 a month once the money is divvied up. Hatchett last appeared in court in May 2009, when he had a paltry 21 kids to his name and said he had no intention of having more. Somehow, he found a way to add nine more to his legacy, so we’re guessing he probably isn’t done at 30.

Arby’s: Michigan boy bites into severed finger in his sandwich

Arby’s apologizes for the accident in which part of a worker’s finger was sliced off and served in a roast beef sandwich to a Michigan boy.

By The Associated Press / May 18, 2012

Ryan Hart a Jackson, Mich. 14-year-old found a piece of a finger in his Arby’s sandwich.

Michigan teen finishing off an Arby’s roast beef sandwich chomped down on something tough that tasted like rubber, so he spit it out.

It was the fleshy, severed pad of an unfortunate employee’s finger, apparently.

Ryan Hart, 14, told the Jackson Citizen Patriot on Wednesday that once he got a good look at it, he knew right away what had been in the junior roast beef sandwich he was eating last Friday.

“I was like, ‘That [has] to be a finger,’” Ryan said.

The employee apparently cut her finger on a meat slicer and left her station without immediately telling anyone, said Steve Hall, the environmental health director for the Jackson County health department. Her co-workers continued filling orders until they found out what had happened, he said.

John Gray, a spokesman for Atlanta-based Arby’s, released a statement Wednesday apologizing for what he described as an isolated and “unfortunate incident.” He said Arby’s is still investigating, but has determined that the Jackson workers shut down food production as soon as they found out what happened and thoroughly cleaned and sanitized the restaurant.

The injured employee was treated at a hospital. Mr. Gray said the franchise has fully cooperated with health officials and was given the approval to remain open.

Ryan’s mother, Jamie Vail, was incredulous. She and her friend, Joe Wheaton, had taken Ryan and his 11-year-old brother to the Arby’s drive-thru and she told the Citizen Patriot she thought her son was joking when he exclaimed he had found a piece of a finger in his sandwich.

“Somebody loses a finger, and you keep sending food out the window? I can’t believe that,” said Ms. Vail. She and Mr. Wheaton said the severed section was about an eighth to a quarter-inch thick and at least one inch long.

Vail said she called 911 and met police at a local health center, where her son’s blood was drawn and he was prescribed some medication.

Ryan said he is feeling fine. Vail told the paper she has been in touch with a lawyer, but hasn’t decided whether to pursue the matter.

There have been a number of incidents in recent years in which a restaurant worker’s accidentally severed flesh found its way into someone’s food.

In 2006, a diner at a TGI Friday’s in Indiana found part of a kitchen worker’s finger on his hamburger. The year before that, a North Carolina man bit into what he thought was candy in his frozen yogurt only to find it, too, belonged to a worker who had had an accident with a food-processing machine.

There have also been hoaxes, including one perpetrated by a Nevada woman and her husband, who claimed in 2005 that she bit into a severed finger in a bowl of chili she bought at a Wendy’s inSan JoseCalif. Both received lengthy prison terms after admitting it was a hoax. Wendy’s said the bad publicity cost it millions of dollars in sales.

Naked Woman Walks In Two New York Stores, Asks For Time

new york woman naked stores

A woman who walked naked into two New York stores and asked for the time has been charged by police with public lewdness, the Times Union newspaper

The woman, who has been identified by Saratoga County District Attorney James Murphy III as Barbara Lafleur, of Saratoga Springs, calmly walked in each store and was captured by security cameras in each.

The first store on Lafleur’s short shopping tour was Curtis Lumber in Ballston Spa, New York. While there, witnesses said she approached two employees before leaving the store of her own accord, telling one employee on the way out, “Have a good day.”

“No one wanted to say much to her,” remarked store manager Bob Eakin to the Times Union. “It’s not a situation you want to be involved in.” It is kinda awkward.

Having failed to score any wood at the lumberyard, Lafleur then walked into a Stewart’s shop nearby, before being asked to leave. One employee told the Union:

“The manager said, ‘Ma’am, are you aware you have no clothes on?’ She was kosher and cool about it, and the manager told her she needed to leave.”

Lafleur has since been charged with public lewdness. In a statement released shortly after charges were pressed, Murphy III gave an insight into Lafleur’s motives:

“While the defendant claimed she was merely expressing her freedom to be fully liberated by walking nude into Stewart’s and Curtis Lumber, this alleged conduct is actually a crime under the penal law. Surprisingly, mental health found no psychiatric issues whatsoever.”

He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

The El Paso Sheriff’s Office says there were no signs of foul play, but they are still investigating

Fahrradi Farfalla FFX requires pedal power to run

Posted: 15 May 2012 05:30 AM PDT

We do know that owning a Ferrari would mean you have made it in life, more or less. After all, the Italian company does come up with some of the best supercars in the world, but as we all know, supercars are far from green – even if Ferrari promises a hybrid model to arrive later in 2013. Well, here is the greenest “supercar” yet – theFahrradi Farfalla FFX that will break one speed record by Ferrari – it is the slowest “supercar” yet. Why do we say so? For starters, Austrian artist Hannes Langwelder decided to swap its V12 gas engine and replace that with a set of pedals. No need to pull up at any gas station here, but it also means arriving at your destination after sweating it out.

“Fahrradi” is German for “bicycle,” while “Farfalla” translates to “butterfly” in Italian, so the mixture known as the Fahrradi Farfalla FFX tips the scales at just 220 pounds, sporting a pedal powertrain that has 11 gears. Gotta love the gullwing doors that resemble a wing beat similar to a butterfly. While this is the slowest “supercar” to date, it is by no means the cheapest. After all, it has a whopping $1.6 million price tag attached to it, now how about that?

For those who are interested, the Fahrradi Farfalla FFX is currently on display at the LENTOS Museum of Art in Linz, Austria. I do wonder just who is going to drop that kind of insane money on a “car” that does not even drive. You can cruise down busy roads in this though, pedaling furiously inside while others on the outside think that you are just trying to show off by driving slowly on purpose, when it is a very different story inside. Definitely able to draw in the chicks, but when they get into the car, boy are they going to be surprised to see that it is not going to rev anywhere near a red line, but rather, there is the dank smell and stench of sweat that they are so familiar with at gyms.
